"New York City is my home, where my parents were born, and where their parents arrived as immigrants. The people who live here are from everywhere. The layers of the city are reflected in the grime and uneven slope of old tenement buildings, the gleam and perfect angles of modern glass structures. These juxtapositions, coupled with the cultural diversity of NYC, produce a unique kind of energy and vitality. This is why I live here.”
TOMORROW, JUNE 27TH, MY 12TH ALBUM AS A LEADER, LAYERS OF THE CITY, WILL BE RELEASED WORLD-WIDE.
Releasing a new album is always exciting, and a little nerve-wracking. Albums represent both a moment in time and months of work. The ‘moment in time’ is the few hours we spend in the studio, recording. There's a focused energy that happens in the studio. Everyone brings their A-game. We joke around like surgeons do when they operate. We try to forget for the moment that what we’re about to play is forever.
There are also months of work that happen before and after the recording. There’s financial planning. New tunes are composed, then put into shape in rehearsal. Logistics are discussed, studios and hotels are booked. Recording, mixing, mastering, artwork, manufacturing....lacquers are cut, test pressings made... oops, we found a pop at the end of side one. New lacquers cut and over-night shipped. The layout of the CD booklet is tweaked, cover image is color-corrected. Product is sent to manufacturers, then back to me, then shipped to retailers and uploaded to digital distributors.
Now....commence promotional phase.
There’s a steady stream of emails back and forth to media outlets, trips to the postoffice, calls to radio programmers and hosts, interviews with magazines and newspapers. Strategy, outreach, engagement.
Then, finally, the big day is here. The album is released. It goes live on Amazon, iTunes and on this website.
It’s been a completely joyous adventure putting this album together. Here’s hoping you all dig it!
